What does a day look like?

A morning walk

  1. ~9:30
    Collected from home
    Your walker arrives around half nine. You don’t need to be in; we hold your key.
  2. + the drive
    Out to proper ground
    Hampstead Heath in groups of four, or Arrandene in Mill Hill in groups of six.
  3. 60 minutes
    A full hour of walking
    Never less. The driving isn’t counted in it.
  4. On the walk
    A WhatsApp from your walker
    A video of your dog in action, and who they’ve been running around with today.
  5. ~1½ hrs later
    Home, settled
    Out of the house about an hour and a half in total.

Hampstead, West Hampstead, Highgate, Primrose Hill, Belsize Park, Kilburn and Cricklewood.

An afternoon walk

  1. ~12:00
    Collected around midday
    After the morning round, walkers collect again in every area we walk.
  2. + the drive
    Up to Hampstead Heath
    A short drive up to Hampstead Heath, in a small, calm group.
  3. 60 minutes
    A full hour on Hampstead Heath
    West Heath woodland or the open Heath Extension, depending on your dog.
  4. On Hampstead Heath
    News on WhatsApp
    A video plus the gossip: who they’ve made friends with.
  5. ~1:30
    Home again
    Same rhythm every day. Dogs settle into it quickly.

Every area we walk. In St John’s Wood and Maida Vale, walks are afternoons only.

A day in the Secret Woodland

  1. 8:30 – 9:30
    Warren collects
    It’s a round, so collection runs across the hour.
  2. ~40 mins
    The drive out
    The dogs settle on the drive and arrive calm.
  3. 4 hours
    In real woodland
    Streams, bracken, muntjac deer and pheasants. Six dogs, one man.
  4. During the day
    Your WhatsApp update
    Videos from the woods and who their best friend was today.
  5. 3:00 – 4:00
    Dropped home
    Properly, satisfyingly knackered.

Barnet and Finchley: ~10:30 to ~2:30, with just a 15–20 minute drive.

That’s him with Warren at twelve weeks, nearly seven years ago, and he’s been on the walks ever since. Walks so close to your ankles you’ll count the group, panic you’re one short, and find him pressed against your foot.

Seven years with us and on daycare every day. A day in the woods and he comes home and sleeps. The howling stopped completely.

Warren has three young children who love dogs. They can get a group of dogs excited in seconds. There’s no skill in that.

The skill of a good dog walker is controlling the excitement. We keep our dogs at a 3 or 4 on the scale. They can jump up to an 8 to play, and then we bring them back down. So when we meet people on Hampstead Heath, our dogs are calm.

We don’t throw tennis balls either. A ball creates competition, and we don’t want to give dogs a reason not to get on.
